Finding the Fitting Container: Memoir Manuscript Workshop

WEDNESDAYS, SEPT. 15 — DEC. 8  | An opportunity to discuss the full scope of your work with other writers. Generate and revise material, all the while completing an intensive structural assessment (or re-assessment) of your book, with particular attention to structure, arc, and theme. After three months, you’ll walk away with either a completed draft—or, at very least, the road map to arrive at one. And better yet, a deeper sense of what the story you are telling has to say.

More details and registration here.

Not All About You: Online Nonfiction Workshop

TUESDAYS, JUNE 22 — JULY 27  |  In this class, we will explore how to incorporate research into personal narrative. This might mean anything—from family history to falconry, true crime to anthropology, botany, or musicology. The possibilities are endless. Is there a story behind or beside the story you are telling that will help you tell it better? What are some ways to structure hybrid work? How do we navigate changes in tone? Or tense? We will study some of the best contemporary essayists and writers for inspiration, and attempt our own fusion of fact and feeling.

More details and registration here.

Memoir and Hybrid Memoir Manuscript Workshop

SUNDAYS, APR. 18 — MAY 23  |  Whether you have a manuscript or just the bones of one, this workshop encourages students to shape, write, and polish their memoir and hybrid/researched memoir book projects. Expect a vigorous discussion of structure, arc, and theme, help with constructing chapter outlines, guidance for generating new material, and weekly workshopping. After six weeks, you’ll walk away with either a completed draft—or, at very least, the road map to arrive at one.

More details and registration here.

Personal Essay Power Hour

MONDAYS, JAN. 25 — MAR. 1 |  Use your lunch break to learn how to write (or perfect) your personal essay. Take the time out of the madness around you to focus your attention on what it is you have to say. In this class, we will read and discuss one master work per week (drawn from the work of Jo Ann Beard, Jesmyn Ward, Leslie Jamison, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Cathy Park Hong, Jia Tolentino, Tressie McMillan Cottom, Alexander Chee, Kiese Laymon, Joan Didion, and others), while working (and workshopping) towards a finished draft of our own.

More details and registration here.

Not All About You: Hybrid Memoir Writing

TUESDAYS, JAN. 12 — FEB. 16  | In this class, we will explore how to incorporate research into personal narrative. This might mean anything—from family history to falconry, true crime to anthropology, or botany, or musicology. The possibilities are endless.
